Cam Newton will start his career as quarterback with the Carolina Panthers against the Miami Dolphins at Sun Life Stadium on Friday night.
Panthers Coach Ron Rivera has made the smartest move of his short Carolina term by giving Cam Newton to start against Miami on Friday,
The young quarterback Newton, 2011 Heisman Trophy winner and first-overall pick out of Auburn, will play with the first team before yielding to Jimmy Clausen in the second quarter, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said on Wednesday.
Rivera said that Newton will start pretty much following the line of what they had planned throughout training camp and that’s to go back and forth with Newton and Jimmy Clausen. He added that it is good opportunity for Newton.
Rivera says the first-team offense will play about one half and that Clausen will get reps with the first team to keep the quarterback for good competition and make the competition even. The coach says he has not made a decision on which quarterback will start the Sept. 11 regular-season opener against Arizona.
Panthers will be favoring Newton second preseason game was not too surprising. He played well in his NFL debut, throwing 134 yards and completing two passes that went for over 30 yards. Newton also led two scoring drives as the Panthers ended up winning the game 20-10.
