Charles Woodson has been fined for an amount of $10K as he thrown a punch in the Green Bay Packers’ season opener against the New Orleans Saints. However, the news has not been announced by the league or team, a person familiar with the situation has reported the news. He was penalized for unnecessary roughness in the third quarter of last Thursday’s game at Lambeau Field after throwing a punch at Saints tight end David Thomas.
Woodson was not ejected and the Packers went on to win 42-34. After the game, he acknowledged that he did it out of frustration. He said that he threw a punch and the guy was holding him a little longer than he wanted. He said that the expected a fine from the league.
It is noted that $10,000 is a low cost for intentionally striking an opponent on the field of play. Andre Johnson and Cortland Finnegan went to blows last season and have ended up each being nailed with a $25,000 fine. Here, Johnson/Finnegan was fined for Oakland’s Richard Seymour who has received a $25,000 fine for punching Ben Roethlisberger. It is known that punching other players as well as historical precedent and it is pretty safe to say that Woodson got off light for his actions against New Orleans.
