NFL Star Bill Dudley Passes Away at 88

nflBill Dudley the star of NFL in the 1940s and early 1950s died Thursday at age 88.

A quotation from Sammy Baugh: “We always wondered how he gained as much yardage as he did. But he had that instinct. He would do things that always amazed me, how he could get out of trouble.”

Andy Barall, who writes about pro football history for the Fifth Down, contributed his thoughts on Dudley and a bygone era: (more…)

Dallas Cowboys Vs. New Orleans Saints NFL Week15 Match Result

nflResult: Dallas 24, New Orleans 17

A perfect record would have been lagniappe, as they say in Louisiana — a little something extra.

The history-making achievement the Saints and their fans really covet is a first Super Bowl appearance, which is all that’s left to accomplish now that Tony Romo and Dallas ended their December doldrums at New Orleans’ expense.

Drew Brees and the Saints are marching toward an unbeaten season no more after their frenzied rally fell short in a 24-17 loss to the Cowboys on Saturday night.

“This is going to sting for a while but we’ve got to be able to put this behind us,” Brees said, noting that the Saints remain in control to finish the No. 1 playoff seeding in the NFC. “It’s all about the next game.” (more…)

Saints fans scramble to watch the game

nflMany New Orleans Saints fans are looking for three things this weekend: Drew Brees to have a big game, the Saints to beat the Dallas Cowboys and a friend with a satellite dish.

The undefeated Saints play the Cowboys at 7:20 p.m. Saturday in one of the most anticipated games of the season at the Superdome.

It almost will certainly be the least watched Saints game of the season. The game will be televised by the NFL Network — a cable network owned by the league that is not carried by the Suddenlink cable system.

That leaves the game available only by satellite — both Dish Network and DirecTV offer the channel on many of their channel packages — or at a handful of local businesses.

“All the Saints games are important, but this is a Haley’s Comet-type event,” said longtime Saints fan David Van Gessel of Pineville. “What’s going on? What are they doing about it?”

Suddenlink officials say they were unable to reach an agreement with the NFL over the cost of carrying the network. (more…)

SWINE FLU SLAMS RAMS

81707287DV023_SANFRANCISCOThe St. Louis Rams cancelled practice yesterday due to an undisclosed number of swine flu cases on the team, just three days before a home game against the Houston Texans. Coach Steve Spagnuolo would not say how many players had the illness but said five or six players had flu-like symptoms, and added that other players had reported symptoms the last few weeks. He anticipated the Rams would return to practice today with a workout that will incorporate some of the elements missed yesterday.

“It’s really more of a precaution than anything,” Spagnuolo said. “We’re checking everybody, we’re just being careful.” Earlier this year, the NHL’s Calgary Flames were criticized when players and their families received the swine flu vaccine while thousands of other people waited in lines that stretched for hours. Two Alberta Health Services employees were later fired. (more…)

Eagles defense faces challenge

nflThe Eagles surrendered 512 total yards to the Giants last week, and yet kept an impressive streak of defensive performances against the run.

It’s been 23 games since the defensive unit has allowed 100 yards to any one rusher, a streak that may be in jeopardy Sunday when the Eagles host the 49ers.

San Francisco can unleash the power and speed of Frank Gore, who is sixth in the NFC in rushing with 846 yards and 10 touchdowns, and he’s topped the 100-yard mark against the Eagles in the past.

His skills are complemented by those of tight end Vernon Davis, who has caught 66 passes for 815 yards and 11 touchdowns, the most among all receivers in the NFL.

The Eagles are wary of both, especially considering how they couldn’t contain the Giants last week. (more…)

Dallas Cowboys can’t keep up with the Saints

nflThe theory is sound when you’re playing against an offense that is testing the boundaries of absurdity in the NFL.

Hold on to the ball, run the clock, don’t let the other team have it. It’s an adult version of keep away.

Welcome to the conundrum the Cowboys face entering Saturday’s game at New Orleans. The Saints are averaging 35.8 points. Drew Brees has thrown 32 touchdown passes and only 10 interceptions. He’s been sacked 15 times. Wide receivers Marques Colston, Devery Henderson and Robert Meachem are each averaging 20 yards per catch in games at the Superdome this year. Running backs Mike Bell, Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush help make up the NFL’s fifth-best rushing offense.

Welcome to Wade Phillips’ world this week. (more…)

NFL fine scuffling duo

nflNew York Giants man Shaun O’Hara and Philadelphia Eagles counterpart Trent Cole were both fined $15,000 for their scuffle last Sunday.

The pair exchanged blows at the end of the Eagles’ thrilling 45-38 shootout victory against their NFC East rivals in New York last Sunday.

IN the closing seconds of the game at Giants Stadium, Big Blue centre O’Hara shoved Cole in the facemask, and the Eagles defensive end responded.

Cole threw a pair of punches in response to O’Hara’s stiff-arm shove and now the NFL has responded by fining the pair $15,000.

O’Hara says that he plans to appeal against the decision as he feels the fine is too severe for the offence, which occurred during an always-heated rivalry game. (more…)

Players struggle to deal with Chris Henry’s death

nflThe death of Bengals receiver Chris Henry hit home in every NFL locker room yesterday, including the one filled with Patriots

One former teammate, practice squad quarterback Jeff Rowe, struggled to come to grips with Henry’s passing. The two played together last season.

Henry, 26, fell off the back of a pickup truck during what police said was a domestic dispute with his fiancee on Wednesday, and he died early yesterday.

Henry had battled off-the-field issues, but friends said he was putting those behind him.

“He was working really hard to change his life,” Rowe said. “That’s probably the saddest part. He was such a great guy. Incredibly talented, his potential was unbelievable. I know everybody absolutely loved him. It just (stinks).” (more…)

Indianapolis Colts Vs. Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Week15 Result

nflIndianapolis 35, Jacksonville 31

Peyton Manning completed every pass early and one big one late, exactly what the Indianapolis Colts needed to stay unbeaten.

Manning threw for 308 yards and four touchdowns, including a 65-yarder to Reggie Wayne to go ahead for good, and the Colts beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 35-31 Thursday night to improve to 14-0 for the first time in franchise history.

The wild game on a cool night included 714 yards, 43 first downs, 10 lead changes, six punts, several big plays and just two turnovers.

“This was an old-time shootout at the OK Corral,” Colts coach Jim Caldwell said.

Jacksonville had a chance to win it in the closing minutes, but David Garrard overthrew Mike Thomas on a third-and-10 play with about a minute to play. Jacob Lacey intercepted the ball, and the Colts ran out the clock. (more…)
