AFC win Pro Bowl in Miami

nflThe AFC beat the NFC as the NFL kicked off Super Bowl week with it’s annual Pro Bowl all-star game in Miami.

Breaking from its traditional date and venue the week after the Super Bowl in Hawaii, the AFC levelled the all-time record at 20 wins apiece with their rival conference following a 41-34 victory at the Dolphins’ stadium, site for next Sunday’s season finale between AFC champions the Indianapolis Colts and the NFC’s New Orleans Saints. Making a case for the Pro Bowl

nflIt’s certainly the time of year to bash the NFL Pro Bowl. The comments from fans and media are largely one-sided against the value of playing the game at all. Of course, this year the volume of negativity is turned up because of the decision to hold the game before the Super Bowl, meaning 14 Super Bowl players can’t participate along with the scores of “medically excused” players.

As a result, there are 31 players participating in the game – almost a full active game-day roster – who were not elected to the Pro Bowl on the original ballot as starters or backups. That’s a lot of players. (more…)

Is the NFL Pro Bowl Broken?

nflIt’s hard to argue in favor of an All-Star game where the league’s seventh best player at his position makes the cut, let alone make the case for watching it. This weekend, football fans will be programming their DVRs — most likely, to record some other channel — when David Garrard, quarterback for the 7-9 Jacksonville Jaguars, plods onto the field.

Colts, Saints Players Forced Into Pro Bowl

nflThe seven players each on the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints who were chosen to the Pro Bowl won’t play in it, as this year it happens a week before the Super Bowl.

But the NFL is still making the players show up.

The league has told all the players who were chosen for the Pro Bowl that they’ll have to be there to talk to the media before the game and stand on the sidelines at the start of it. (more…)

Carpenter Named To AFC Pro Bowl Team

Raiders Dolphins FootballPostseason awards are nothing new to Dan Carpenter.  The kicker from Helena racked up all-conference selections playing for Helena High School, and garnered four All-Big Sky selections and was named an All-American twice during his illustrious career with the Montana Grizzlies.

But Wednesday afternoon Carpenter was the recipient of a new accolade, his biggest yet: an NFL Pro Bowl selection.

Carpenter, in his second season with the Miami Dolphins, was named to the AFC roster of the NFL’s all-star game, replacing San Diego kicker Nate Kaeding, who pulled out Wednesday morning. (more…)

Two Giants Linemen Added to Pro Bowl Roster

GYI0051206377.jpgThe Jets are given credit for having one of the best offense lines in football, but their stadium-sharing rivals might have a little something to say about that.

Giants linemen David Diehl and Chris Snee were added to the NFC Pro Bowl roster Wednesday thanks to Jahari Evans and Jonathan Stinchcomb of the New Orleans Saints, who are playing in the Super Bowl the Sunday after. You can be sure none of the four are too disappointed in the situation. (more…)

New Pro Bowl Format Good For Fletcher

nflWashington Redskins linebacker London Fletcher is rooting for Jonathan Vilma and his team, New Orleans, in the Super Bowl.

That’s because the Saints’ NFC Championship win got him a Pro Bowl nod.

“For selfish reasons, I’m a Saints fan. They got me here,” said Fletcher, a 12-year pro but first time Pro Bowler who will be replacing Vilma in the lineup. (more…)
