It has just been two days after the long snapper Cullen Loeffler has been sidelined for the remainder of the 2011 NFL season. However, the Minnesota Vikings has got a replacement signed. The former Patriots veteran Matt Katula has been signed by Vikings to a one year deal.
On the Vikings’ Sunday matchup with the Atlanta Falcons, Loeffler was blindsided by Kerry Meier while attempting to cover a punt. The collision has resulted n a broken sacrum, a large triangular bone at the base of the spine. However, the team is expected to place him on the Injured Reserve list soon.
The Vikings’ defensive end, Jared Allen has taken over the snapping duties as the team’s emergency long snapper. He snapped the ball on four punts and two PATs in Loeffler’s adsence, everything without any issues. He performed admirably but the coaching staff not willing to risk their Pro Bowl defensive end on special teams.
Matt Katula took his long snapping talents to New England where he joined the Patriots for the last eight games of the 2010 season. After the NFL Lockout came to an end, he was waived and has been out of the streets since.
