The Jets announced on Saturday that they’re looking forward to a coin toss that will be held to determine who gets to play the first regular-season game at the stadium the organizations share equally.
“We look forward to the coin toss,†Jets spokesman Bruce Speight said.
Sounds fair. The only problem is no one else, including the NFL, will confirm this coin toss will actually take place. The theory is that the Jets, fearing the game will simply be awarded to the Giants, want a coin flip to take place because then they’d have a chance.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said commissioner Roger Goodell is the individual who “determines the schedule.†But the Jets’ Web site boldly claims this coin flip will take place: “the date, time and other details of this New Meadowlands Stadium winner-take-home coin toss are still being “minted,” so to speak. It’s quite possible there will be media coverage for this mini-event and fans may be invited into the stadium to observe the proceedings and cheer on their side — meaning their team as well as their team’s side of the medallion.â€
The Jets go on to point out that in the 26 seasons that the franchises shared Giants Stadium, the Giants had the first home game 18 times, and the Giants were first in 16 of the last 20 seasons.
Because the Giants and Jets or the Jets and Giants will not face each other in the regular season, someone will be the big loser on opening weekend. Our bet is there is a good chance the New York team that hits the road during Week 1 will get a prime time home game in Week 2, on Sunday or Monday night.
