Playoff-bound Bengals put loss behind them

nflNo NFL team wants to enter the playoffs with a 37-0 loss to their upcoming opponent as their last body of work.

Then again, when that team had little to play for and its opponent had everything at stake, a lopsided result is not unexpected.

The New York Jets had to beat Cincinnati on Sunday to make the playoffs. The Bengals had little on the line, having already clinched the AFC North and a first-round home playoff game.

But the way the Jets dominated, outgaining the Bengals 320-72, raised red flags about Cincinnati’ viability as a playoff factor.

“Did I want to come out playing as poorly as we did? No, not at all,” Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis said yesterday. “If I could have got 12 guys from Jones Junior High, we probably could have played better.” (more…)

Cincinnati Bengals 7-16 Victory Over Cleveland Browns

nflLess than two weeks after the Cincinnati Bengals signed him as an inexpensive insurance policy, Larry Johnson showed he can still be the leading man.

The newcomer piled up 107 yards on Sunday, leading the way as the Bengals ran the table in the AFC North by running over the Cleveland Browns 16-7.

“I’m just glad they trust me to go in there, especially with the division and the playoffs on the line,” said Johnson, who was released by Kansas City after a suspension. “I just came here for a second chance.” (more…)

Cleveland Browns Vs. Cincinnati Bengals Week12 NFL Match Preview

nflA last-minute collapse against one of the worst teams in the NFL kept the Cincinnati Bengals from increasing their lead in the AFC North. Possibly getting Cedric Benson back Sunday for a meeting with the lowly Cleveland Browns might be just what they need to bounce back.

Cincinnati (7-3) opened the season with a 16-12 loss to Denver after giving up a fluky 87-yard touchdown catch with 11 seconds left. The Bengals then surprisingly won seven of eight, posting an 18-12 victory at Pittsburgh on Nov. 15 to move into sole possession of first in the division.

They were in prime position to expand that lead last Sunday as the other three teams in the North lost, but the Bengals gave up 10 points in the final 33 seconds to fall 20-17 at Oakland. Cincinnati committed eight penalties, fumbled three times and missed a field goal to see its three-game winning streak come to an end. (more…)

Ravens shut out the Browns with a 16-0 victory

Redskins Ravens Football

Box Score Ravens 16 and Browns 0

Even after Baltimore had punished Brady Quinn, Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis got in one more vicious hit on Cleveland’s quarterback.

Angered over Quinn’s questionable chop block on Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs following an interception, Lewis accused Quinn of a dirty play.

“Heck yeah it was a cheap shot,” Lewis snapped after Baltimore rocked Cleveland 16-0. “When you’re running down and you’re looking at the quarterback going at somebody’s knees who doesn’t even have the ball. I want to see if he gets the same fine I got or even higher. Now this man is out four or five weeks because of some baloney like that.”

For 30 minutes, the Ravens were inefficient, unproductive and disorganized.

In 17 seconds, they changed all that.

Ray Rice scored on a 13-yard run on Baltimore’s first possession of the third quarter and safety Dawan Landry returned an interception of Quinn 48 yards for a touchdown on Cleveland’s next play as the Ravens overcame a horrendous start and routed the lowly Browns.

The game also included two plays that could force the league to hand out fines, and it ended with Browns wide receiver Josh Cribbs being carried from the field on a stretcher following another nasty hit. He was taken to a hospital for tests. Cleveland coach Eric Mangini said Cribbs was transported as a precaution.

“He’s got feeling and movement in all parts of his body,” Mangini said.

The Ravens (5-4) didn’t score in the opening half, when they used up their three timeouts in the first 6:15, committed silly penalties, converted just one third down and actually made the Browns (1-8) look respectable.

“I guess I agree it wasn’t pretty,” quarterback Joe Flacco said. “It was an ugly win, but that’s the way some wins are in the NFL.” (more…)

Bengals 18-12 win over the Steelers, the first time in team history

D056997147.jpg

Box Score Bengals 18 and Steelers 12

Maybe it wasn’t a concession speech, even if it sounded like one. The Bengals spent most of the last 20 seasons chasing Pittsburgh, and now it’s the other way around, and the Steelers realize it’s a decidedly uphill climb.

“They’re clearly the best team in the division,” safety Ryan Clark said after the Bengals beat the Steelers 18-12 on Sunday to take control of the AFC North. “I’d give my left arm to play them again.”Who could have possibly envisioned the Super Bowl champions saying that about a rival they’ve largely dominated and, at times, intimidated since the 1980s, especially with seven games left in the season? The Bengals (7-2) pulled it off by beating the Steelers (6-3) at their own game in their own stadium, where Pittsburgh had won its last 10.

They smothered Ben Roethlisberger and Pittsburgh’s running game, yielded only four field goals by Jeff Reed and converted a tight-as-it-gets game’s only big play, Bernard Scott’s 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

“That’s probably the most grinding football game I ever experienced,” Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said.

The Steelers were without star safety Troy Polamalu for all but the opening series as he aggravated the left knee injury that previously sidelined him for four games. He underwent an MRI exam, but there was no immediate word about his status.Whether they have Polamalu or not the rest of the way, the Steelers realize they’re in big trouble.

By sweeping the season series for the first time since 1998, the Bengals effectively lead Pittsburgh by two games because they own the tiebreaker and, for the first time in their history, a 5-0 division record. Usually by now they’re playing for next year, only to discover it may have arrived. (more…)

Can Bengals Cut Mustard At Heinz?

Colts Bengals Football

Why did Chad Ochocinco want to send mustard to the Pittsburgh Steelers?

Because he didn’t think they could “ketch-up.”

Unfortuanately for Chad, Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis will not allow the WR to send anything to the Steelers seeing as the two battle for top spot in the AFC North Sunday–both currently are sporting 6-2 records.

The Steelers are favored by a TD, the Total has been set at 42 and in the last 11 times they’ve hosted the Bengals, the Over has cashed 8 times.

Pittsburgh really doesn’t need any bulletin board material as it, like its regular season record, is 6-2 SU and ATS in the last eight overall games against Cincinnati.(source)

Bengals sweep Ravens, have sights set on A-North

nfl

For all the attention directed at the Cincinnati Bengals’ offense during their 5-2 start, questions have often followed about the defense’s tendency to dig holes or jeopardize leads.

However, no one was voicing those doubts following Sunday’s 17-7 win vs. Baltimore.

The Bengals’ beleaguered defense allowed only a fourth-quarter scoring drive and sealed the victory with three consecutive sacks of quarterback Joe Flacco during the Ravens’ comeback bid. Cincinnati held the league’s No. 3 team in third-down conversions (48.4%) to just one in 10 tries and 215 total yards while forcing two turnovers.

That’s the type of defense Baltimore was known for not long ago.

“When you’re playing the Ravens, the best defense on the field that day is going to win,” Bengals cornerback Leon Hall said. “You focus on the offense, but you look on the defensive side of the ball and just try to play better than them. It was just guys out there making plays.”

As a result the Bengals (6-2) earned, not only their best start in 20 years, but a season sweep of the Ravens and most importantly, first place in the AFC North pending Pittsburgh’s outcome Monday night at Denver. They also improved to 4-0 in the division.

Baltimore (4-4) was left with its fourth loss in five games and little hope of winning the division. (more…)
