Cushing again shows he is aching to be a star in the NFL

nflNFL Week 16 News

Brian Cushing remained in the back somewhere, back with the ice packs and IVs, the doctors and trainers, long after most of his teammates had showered, dressed and departed.

He needs a little extra time these days, time to ice down all the bruises, tape up the breaks and soak under a hot shower to calm all the screaming body parts.

This rookie season has taken a toll on him. First, there’s the sheer number of games, far longer and more exhausting than anything he experienced at USC. Second, there’s the speed and passion with which he plays. (more…)

Indianapolis (11-0) is one win shy of the New England Patriots’ NFL-record 21-game run from 2006-08. The Colts can tie the record if they beat Tennessee at home next weekend.

Is Brown an answer for Texans?

nfl

The Texans let it be known this week that Steve Slaton would be back as their starting running back.

But it’s Chris Brown who’s gotten a big share of the work for them so far and is a more physical option.

The Titans are playing defenses that prioritize stopping Andre Johnson, who hurt them badly in the first meeting.

Titans 20-17 victory over the Texans

nfl

Vince Young remained undefeated as a starter for the Tennessee Titans this season thanks to Rob Bironas and his knack for making big kicks against the Houston Texans.

Bironas kicked a 53-yard field goal with less than a minute left and the Titans beat the Texans 20-17 Monday night for their fourth straight victory after starting the season with six losses in a row. It was against the Texans two years ago that Bironas set an NFL record with eight field goals, including the game-winner as time expired in a 38-36 win. He also made a 50-yarder Monday.

“I always feel good down here … I like Houston,” he said. “I don’t think Houston likes me too much.” The Texans (5-5) had a chance to tie it, but Kris Brown’s 49-yard attempt with 1 second remaining was wide left. It was his second miss of the game and the second straight game he’s missed a chance to send the Texans to overtime. (more…)

Houston Texans vs Indianapolis Colts NFL Match Predictions Week 9

nflnfl

The Indianapolis Colts host the Houston Texans, Sunday Nov 8, as the Colts look for their tenth straight home win. Indianapolis has owned this series, having won 13 of the 14 all-time matchups. NFL oddsmakers at Sportsbetting.com have the Colts as -9 point home favs over the Texans with the over/under set at 48 points .

The Texans (5-3) won in Buffalo 31-10 in Week 8 and now sit second in the AFC South. QB Matt Schaub made 25 of 34 passes for 268 yards with two interceptions; overall he’s thrown for 2,342 yards with 16 TD passes and seven interceptions for a 100.5 passer rating. RB Ryan Moats had 23 carries for 126 yards with three TD’s, while WR Andre Johnson made six catches for 63 yards. The Texans pulled down two interceptions and had two sacks on the day. By winning three in a row to improve to 5-3, Houston has already answered a lot of questions about its ability to find consistency and play well for more than a one or two week stretch. This week presents the real test, though. If the Texans seriously want to challenge for the AFC South title, they have to start beating the Colts. The Texans will put their third ranked passing game up against the Colts seventh ranked pass defense . Star TE Owen Daniels was lost for the season to a knee injury last Sunday and now a couple of unheralded backups step into the spotlight. Joel Dreessen has functioned mostly as a blocker throughout his four-year career and he’ll be taking over the TE duties. They’ll also be without third-string TE James Casey. The Texans average 24.8ppg and give up 21ppg, while they are 3-1 SU on the road where they average 28.5ppg and allow 21.5ppg. They are 4-3-1 ATS and 3-5 over/under. (more…)

Texans want RB Slaton on the ball

nfl

With six fumbles, Texans running back Steve Slaton has coughed up the ball more than any non-quarterback in the NFL. He has lost four of the six, leaving him tied for second in that category behind struggling Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

The Texans don’t know why Slaton is struggling with ball security this season after fumbling just three times as a rookie last year.

“Coaches, players, everybody’s trying to help him out here,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. “We’re all here to help him and we’re all here to support him, but he’s got a job to do and that’s protect the ball.”

The Texans have emphasized keeping two hands on the ball in certain situations and even added drills in practice where everyone lines up and tries to knock it loose. Kubiak believes people go for the ball more when they know a player has been fumbling.

“When you get a little bit of a reputation, you put a few balls on the ground for a couple of weeks, and it’s almost like these guys just start getting a lot tougher, as far as holding you up,” he said. “People smell blood.”

Slaton has fumbled in five of the Texans’ seven games this season and had two in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans.

“You’ve just got to be prepared and do more to help yourself,” Slaton said. “Once you have a couple, you know teams are going to stand you up, so it’s definitely tough when you have two guys yanking on you. But it has got to be in the back of my mind to know that if I can’t get any more yards I’ve got to just go on the ground, just cover up and get down.” (more…)
