New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton wants his team focused on the task at hand, not the Saints’ three-game losing streak to close the NFL regular season.
They are, after all, the No. 1 seed for the NFC playoffs.
Payton was quick to emphasize that the Saints (13-3) showed a resourcefulness, and a will to win, in opening the season with 13 consecutive victories. The Saints’ pursuit of a perfect season came to a crashing halt with a 24-17 loss to Dallas, the No. 3 seed in the NFC, and they would lose their next two games, too, first to lowly Tampa Bay (20-17 in overtime) and then the Carolina Panthers.
Payton rested most of his key players in the 23-10 loss to Carolina on Sunday in Charlotte, N.C., including Pro Bowl quarterback Drew Brees, who was the Saints’ third quarterback for the game and watched from the sideline. Mark Brunell, the Saints’ 39-year-old backup quarterback, passed for just 102 yards in that game. He completed 15 of 29 passes against the Panthers with one interception. (more…)
