Saints will be ready for playoffs

nflNew Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton wants his team focused on the task at hand, not the Saints’ three-game losing streak to close the NFL regular season.

They are, after all, the No. 1 seed for the NFC playoffs.

Payton was quick to emphasize that the Saints (13-3) showed a resourcefulness, and a will to win, in opening the season with 13 consecutive victories. The Saints’ pursuit of a perfect season came to a crashing halt with a 24-17 loss to Dallas, the No. 3 seed in the NFC, and they would lose their next two games, too, first to lowly Tampa Bay (20-17 in overtime) and then the Carolina Panthers.

Payton rested most of his key players in the 23-10 loss to Carolina on Sunday in Charlotte, N.C., including Pro Bowl quarterback Drew Brees, who was the Saints’ third quarterback for the game and watched from the sideline. Mark Brunell, the Saints’ 39-year-old backup quarterback, passed for just 102 yards in that game. He completed 15 of 29 passes against the Panthers with one interception. (more…)

New England Patriots Vs. Buffalo Bills NFL Week15 Result

nflResult: New England 17, Buffalo 10

So much for all those accusing Randy Moss of quitting. Same thing for anyone wondering whether the New England Patriots are vulnerable this season.

No matter how inconsistently the Patriots have played — particularly on the road — or what distractions they’ve faced, one thing remains constant: They can always count on beating their perennial patsy, the Buffalo Bills.

A week after being accused of giving up by Carolina Panthers defenders, Moss bounced back with five catches for 70 yards and a touchdown in a 17-10 win Sunday. And Tully Banta-Cain anchored a banged-up defense with a three sacks in a victory that lacked style points, but accomplished what’s most important by inching the AFC East-leading Patriots (9-5) closer to clinching a playoff berth. Carolina Panthers Vs. New England Patriots NFL Week14 Result

nflResult: Carolina 10, New England 20

The New England Patriots have needed a second-half spark most of the season. On Sunday, Wes Welker gave it to them.

Welker caught five passes on their tiebreaking series in the third quarter and the Patriots ended their worst slide in seven seasons with a 20-10 win over the Carolina Panthers.

“We’d been flat pretty much the whole game and we needed a big drive there,” Welker said. “That’s when you have to step up.”

Welker finished with 10 catches for 105 yards, his fifth 100-yard performance of the season. He has an NFL-high 105 receptions and joined Marvin Harrison, Jerry Rice and Herman Moore as the only receivers with at least three consecutive 100-catch seasons. (more…)

New York Jets 7-16 Victory Over Carolina Panthers

nflDarrelle Revis saw the ball deflect off Steve Smith’s foot and float right into his hands.

Finally, the New York Jets thought, a lucky bounce that went their way.

Revis returned one of the Jets’ four interceptions 67 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and New York overcame an injury scare to quarterback Mark Sanchez before holding on to beat the Carolina Panthers 17-6 on Sunday.

“That was a sigh of relief,” Revis said of his early touchdown. “That was an easy score right there. It doesn’t get any better than that to start us off.”

Thomas Jones had a 3-yard touchdown run as the Jets (5-6) won at home for the first time since beating Tennessee in Week 3, sending the Panthers (4-7) to their second straight loss. (more…)

Carolina Panthers Vs. New York Jets Week12 NFL Match Preview

nflComing off a season when they tied for the best record in the NFC, the Carolina Panthers clearly expected to return to the playoffs. Instead, injuries and poor play are dimming those postseason hopes.

The Panthers will try to overcome an injury-ravaged defense Sunday when they visit the New York Jets, another team fading in the playoff race.

Carolina (4-6) went 12-4 last season, winning the NFC South and matching the New York Giants for the best record in the conference. That success was muted when the Panthers were upset in the divisional playoffs, falling 33-13 to Arizona.

Despite that disappointment, the Panthers were expected to mount another run at the division title this season.

Things haven’t worked out that way. (more…)

Miami won with 24-17 about Carolina in Week11 NFL Match

nfl

With Ronnie Brown lost for the season, the Miami Dolphins turned to their aging running back.

Ricky Williams showed he’s still got it.

The 32-year-old Williams rushed for 119 yards and scored three touchdowns, and the Dolphins beat the Carolina Panthers 24-17 on Thursday night for their fourth win in six games to get into the AFC playoff picture.

A day after learning Brown is lost for the season to a foot injury, the Dolphins (5-5) continued their surge after an 0-3 start behind Williams. The 2002 NFL rushing champion had a receiving and rushing touchdown in the same game for the first time in his career that included a couple of lost seasons. (more…)

Miami Dolphins Vs Carolina Panthers Week 11 NFL Match

nfl

This Thursday night a pair of 4-5 teams will be looking to get back to .500 when the Miami Dolphins take on the Carolina Panthers at Bank of American Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Last week, the Dolphins needed a late field goal to escape with a 25-23 win over Tampa Bay while the Panthers took care of division-rival Atlanta 28-19. These two teams have not met since the 2005 season when the Dolphins beat the Panthers 27-24 in a good one behind 132 rushing yards by Ronnie Brown. There have only been three meetings between these two franchises and Miami has won all three.

Miami won its only other trip to Carolina 13-9 back in 1998, but the Phins could have their work cut out for themselves this time around. The Panthers are coming on strong and Miami running back Ronnie Brown is listed as doubtful. That means that Ricky Williams, who has rushed for 558 yards and six scores on a 5.3 yards per carry average, will take over as the feature back. But Williams is no spring chicken, and seems to thrive because he is a change of pace after the defense gets used to Brown. Lex Hilliard is the next running back in line and he will likely split carries with Williams Thursday. If Hilliard does the job, the Dolphins, who are averaging 156 yards rushing on 4.6 yards per carry, will still be tough to stop on the ground. (more…)
