Plenty of blame to share in Oakland Raiders debacle

STFNFL Week 16 News

Losing to the Cleveland Browns isn’t the most pathetic part. Nor is it the Raiders’ complaining about unfair officiating.

What makes Sunday’s 23-9 loss so utterly disgusting is the way the Raiders earned their 10th defeat this season.

Bad quarterback play. Bad receiving. Bad coaching. Bad discipline. And don’t dare forget the bad defense that too often gets overlooked.

That wicked combination makes up the familiar theme in the Raiders’ seven consecutive seasons of double-digit defeats. (more…)

San Diego Chargers Vs. Cleveland Browns NFL Week 13 Picks

nflNFL Week13 Picks: The San Diego Chargers continue to roll over opponents. A Cleveland Browns team that owns one of the NFL’s worst defenses could have a difficult time slowing them down.

The AFC West-leading Chargers look to win their 15th straight December game Sunday when they face the injury-plagued Browns, who will try to avoid their 10th consecutive home loss.

San Diego (8-3) won its sixth in a row last week, 43-14 over Kansas City to regain a one-game lead over Denver in the division.

The Chargers, who posted their highest point total since a 48-29 victory over the New York Jets last Sept. 22, scored four of their five touchdowns off turnovers. (more…)

The newcomer piled up 107 yards on Sunday, leading the way as the Bengals ran the table in the AFC North by running over the Cleveland Browns 16-7.

“I’m just glad they trust me to go in there, especially with the division and the playoffs on the line,” said Johnson, who was released by Kansas City after a suspension. “I just came here for a second chance.” (more…)

Cleveland Browns Vs. Cincinnati Bengals Week12 NFL Match Preview

nflA last-minute collapse against one of the worst teams in the NFL kept the Cincinnati Bengals from increasing their lead in the AFC North. Possibly getting Cedric Benson back Sunday for a meeting with the lowly Cleveland Browns might be just what they need to bounce back.

Cincinnati (7-3) opened the season with a 16-12 loss to Denver after giving up a fluky 87-yard touchdown catch with 11 seconds left. The Bengals then surprisingly won seven of eight, posting an 18-12 victory at Pittsburgh on Nov. 15 to move into sole possession of first in the division.

They were in prime position to expand that lead last Sunday as the other three teams in the North lost, but the Bengals gave up 10 points in the final 33 seconds to fall 20-17 at Oakland. Cincinnati committed eight penalties, fumbled three times and missed a field goal to see its three-game winning streak come to an end. (more…)

The Detroit Lions have allowed more points than any other team this season after nearly setting a modern era record for defensive ineptitude during their winless 2008.

Keeping the Cleveland Browns out of the end zone hasn’t been much of a challenge for anyone.

nfl

The latest NFL Power Rankings are out.

The power rankings panel consists of ESPN senior writers John Clayton and Jeffri Chadiha, AFC South blogger Paul Kuharsky and NFC West blogger Mike Sando.

No. 5 New England Patriots

* Last week’s rating: No. 6
* Best rating: No. 5
* Worst rating: No. 5
* Note: The Patriots climbed a spot in the ranking for coming thisclose to beating the No. 2 Indianapolis Colts on the road. The Patriots will have another shot to assert themselves 13 days from now in the Superdome against the No. 1 New Orleans Saints.

No. 18 Miami Dolphins

* Last week’s rating: No. 17
* Best rating: No. 18 (Clayton, Chadiha, Sando)
* Worst rating: No. 19 (Kuharsky)
* Note: A narrow victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t impress the panel, but those who followed the game closely have to give the tattered Dolphins credit for one of their gutsiest performances in recent years.

No. 21 New York Jets

* Last week’s rating: No. 18
* Best rating: No. 19 (Clayton)
* Worst rating: No. 22 (Sando)

* Best rating: No. 25 (Clayton, Kuharsky)
* Worst rating: No. 26 (Chadiha, Sando)
* Note: After floating around at No. 21 for most of the year and No. 22 as recently as two weeks ago, the Bills finally are settling in the area I thought they belonged for over a month. They rank ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, Buccaneers, Detroit Lions, St. Louis Rams and Cleveland Browns.(source)

Brown fans have Great Meeting with Owner

nfl

Die-hard Browns fan Mike Randall made sure he put on his Sunday best for his important meeting with team owner Randy Lerner.

He wore a giant plastic dog bone hat.

The season-ticket holder, aka “Dawg Pound Mike,” one of the best known members of Cleveland’s rabid bleacher section of fans, spent two hours on Tuesday meeting with Lerner, who stepped away from a turbulent week and his busy schedule for the visit.

Randall and his friend, Tony Schafer, have been encouraging others to stay out of their seats for the opening kickoff of Cleveland’s next home game on Nov. 16 to protest the Browns’ futility. The fans were scheduled to spend 30 minutes with Lerner but ended up staying much longer.

“It was great,” Randall said. “How many owners would spend two hours meeting with two fans? None.” (more…)
