Colts, Saints Players Forced Into Pro Bowl

nflThe seven players each on the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints who were chosen to the Pro Bowl won’t play in it, as this year it happens a week before the Super Bowl.

But the NFL is still making the players show up.

The league has told all the players who were chosen for the Pro Bowl that they’ll have to be there to talk to the media before the game and stand on the sidelines at the start of it. (more…)

Carpenter Named To AFC Pro Bowl Team

Raiders Dolphins FootballPostseason awards are nothing new to Dan Carpenter.  The kicker from Helena racked up all-conference selections playing for Helena High School, and garnered four All-Big Sky selections and was named an All-American twice during his illustrious career with the Montana Grizzlies.

But Wednesday afternoon Carpenter was the recipient of a new accolade, his biggest yet: an NFL Pro Bowl selection.

Carpenter, in his second season with the Miami Dolphins, was named to the AFC roster of the NFL’s all-star game, replacing San Diego kicker Nate Kaeding, who pulled out Wednesday morning. (more…)

No Change Necessary For NFL Over Time

NFC Championship FootballOnce in a while, when a high-profile NFL game is decided in overtime by the team who won the coin toss immediately scoring, a firestorm of criticism erupts.

The system is a joke! Both teams should get the ball, like college!

I’m here to say calm down, the current NFL system is the best way, and I hope it never changes. (more…)

Saints Super Bowl-ing On Coin Toss

nflThe New Orleans Saints joined earlier AFC Championship winner Indianapolis in advancing to the Super Bowl, after escaping at home with a 31-28 overtime win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night. They did this, in part, thanks to the flip of a coin.

Just as the game itself began with a coin toss to determine possession of the football, so too did overtime. But unlike regulation, the NFL playoffs have no clock in overtime. Still, the first team to score is the winner, regardless of time or how many possessions each team has. (more…)

Minnesota Vikings Vs. New Orleans Saints NFC Championship Picks

nflIf the Minnesota Vikings are going to get things turned around and make a push for the playoffs, like most “experts” predicted they would, a strong performance in front of a national audience on ESPN’s Monday Night Football versus the New Orleans Saints in the Superdome is a must this week.

The Vikings closed the gap to within a touchdown on the road last week in Tennessee, but an interception on a deflected pass late in the fourth quarter gave the Titans all of the cushion they needed for a comfortable 30-17 victory. (more…)

NFL Playoffs A Better Treat Than Super Bowl

nflSeeing what day professional football calls its own, it is fitting for the NFL postseason to be likened to an ice cream sundae.

The Super Bowl is the eye-catching cherry on top, completing the dessert and making it what it is: essential to the end result but ultimately only a single ingredient.

But the real treat is the two scoops of ice cream, pecans and chocolate syrup that are the Wild Card, Divisional and Conference Championship Rounds of the NFL playoffs. (more…)

NFL Conference Title Predictions

nfl hotWent 2-2 last week, same as wild card weekend in that I was perfect on Saturday and whiffed on Sunday. I now stand at 180-84 (all games straight up). More importantly, I’m up four with three games to play.

The Jets will win if … They win the turnover battle (an absolute must), churn up clock and yards on the ground and find ways to limit Dallas Clark and make the Colts thoroughly one-dimensional by taking away the run. (more…)

The Good, the Bad, And The Ugly

nflIt was the NFL’s version of the Elite Eight, but in reality, four of the teams did not look very elite. Once again, the first three games of the weekend were varying degrees of blowouts as the favored home teams pretty much had their way in those games. Heading into the home stretch, the Saints, Colts, and Vikings all had tickets in hand for next week.

Then came the fourth game. Could the top two seeds in each conference possibly advance to the championship games? Of course not. (more…)

More Troubles For Minnesota Vikings

nflPro Bowl DT Kevin Williams suffered a knee injury on Sunday and did not practice Wednesday. There were no details about the severity of the injury, but even if he plays in the NFC championship game it’s possible he might not be 100 percent.

That’s a concern because of his importance to the defense. His uncommon blend of power and quickness makes him vital to the team’s run defense, which ranked No. 2 in the NFL after leading the league three consecutive years. Williams also is one of the best interior pass rushers in the NFL. (more…)

Deuce Retires From NFL At 31

nflBut in the end, he said, his surgically repaired knees just don’t work the way they used to work, and because of that he’s giving up hope on returning to the National Football League.

McAllister, 31, said Tuesday he’s retiring from professional football after eight seasons with the New Orleans Saints and six surgeries on his battered knees.

McAllister, who last played in 2008, was put back on the Saints’ active roster last Friday for what turned out to be a brief, albeit inspirational, return to football. (more…)
