The AFC beat the NFC as the NFL kicked off Super Bowl week with it’s annual Pro Bowl all-star game in Miami.
Breaking from its traditional date and venue the week after the Super Bowl in Hawaii, the AFC levelled the all-time record at 20 wins apiece with their rival conference following a 41-34 victory at the Dolphins’ stadium, site for next Sunday’s season finale between AFC champions the Indianapolis Colts and the NFC’s New Orleans Saints. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has pulled out of the Pro Bowl after a season in which he played with rib and finger injuries.
Brady was replaced on the AFC squad by Matt Schaub of the Houston Texans after the first alternate, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, also declined to play.
There were three lineup changes in the NFC: New York Giants receiver Steve Smith will replace Arizona receiver Larry Fitzgerald, San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore has been added in place of St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson and Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman will replace Arizona’s Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Brian Cushing remained in the back somewhere, back with the ice packs and IVs, the doctors and trainers, long after most of his teammates had showered, dressed and departed.
He needs a little extra time these days, time to ice down all the bruises, tape up the breaks and soak under a hot shower to calm all the screaming body parts.
This rookie season has taken a toll on him. First, there’s the sheer number of games, far longer and more exhausting than anything he experienced at USC. Second, there’s the speed and passion with which he plays. (more…)

The Miami Dolphins host the Houston Texans, Sunday Dec 27, as both teams desperately try for an AFC Wild Card spot. The Texans have won all four meetings. NFL oddsmakers at BETREPUBLIC.com have the Dolphins as -3 point home favs over the Texans with the over/under set at 45 points .
The Texans (7-7) won in St.Louis 16-13 in Week 15 and sit last in the AFC West with a chance at a Wild Card. QB Matt Schaub made 28 of 40 passes for 367 yards with one TD; overall he’s thrown for 4,181 yards with 25 TD’s and 13 interceptions for a 98.9 passer rating. RB Ryan Moats had 13 carries for 46 yards, while WR Andre Johnson made nine catches for 196 yards. WR Kevin Walter made four catches for 42 yards with a TD. They could’ve done better making only 1-4 from the red zone. The Texans second ranked pass game will look to pick apart the Dolphins first year CB’s Vontae Davis and Sean Smith as well as backup Safety Chris Clemens. WR Andre Johnson leads his team and the league with 1,433 yards receiving and eight TD’s. They’ll be up against the Dolphins 23rd ranked pass defense. The Texans are the second worst team at running the ball and they’ll be against the Dolphins 17th ranked rush defense. The Texans have averaged 22.7ppg and allowed 14.3ppg in their last three games. They are 4-3 SU on the road where they average 23.6ppg and give up an average 20.3ppg.They are 6-7-1 ATS and 4-10 over/under. (more…)

The St. Louis Rams cancelled practice yesterday due to an undisclosed number of swine flu cases on the team, just three days before a home game against the Houston Texans. Coach Steve Spagnuolo would not say how many players had the illness but said five or six players had flu-like symptoms, and added that other players had reported symptoms the last few weeks. He anticipated the Rams would return to practice today with a workout that will incorporate some of the elements missed yesterday.
“It’s really more of a precaution than anything,” Spagnuolo said. “We’re checking everybody, we’re just being careful.” Earlier this year, the NHL’s Calgary Flames were criticized when players and their families received the swine flu vaccine while thousands of other people waited in lines that stretched for hours. Although the Indianapolis Colts have a perfect record, they’ve been quite vulnerable over the past few weeks, escaping with several close calls.
The Houston Texans have been on the opposite end of the spectrum, losing back-to-back games in agonizing fashion — including once at Indianapolis.
The Colts look to remain undefeated and move closer to locking up a playoff spot Sunday when they visit a Texans team trying to win its first game in a month.
Indianapolis (10-0) holds a three-game lead in the chase for the AFC’s top seed and its 19-game winning streak is the second-longest in NFL history behind New England’s 21-game run from 2006-08. Nothing, though, has come easy for the Colts lately.
Indianapolis, which can clinch the AFC South for the sixth time in seven years with a victory this week coupled with a Jacksonville loss to San Francisco, has won its last four games by a combined 10 points. (more…)
