Playoff-bound Bengals put loss behind them

nflNo NFL team wants to enter the playoffs with a 37-0 loss to their upcoming opponent as their last body of work.

Then again, when that team had little to play for and its opponent had everything at stake, a lopsided result is not unexpected.

The New York Jets had to beat Cincinnati on Sunday to make the playoffs. The Bengals had little on the line, having already clinched the AFC North and a first-round home playoff game.

But the way the Jets dominated, outgaining the Bengals 320-72, raised red flags about Cincinnati’ viability as a playoff factor.

“Did I want to come out playing as poorly as we did? No, not at all,” Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis said yesterday. “If I could have got 12 guys from Jones Junior High, we probably could have played better.” (more…)

Cleveland Browns Vs. Cincinnati Bengals Week12 NFL Match Preview

nflA last-minute collapse against one of the worst teams in the NFL kept the Cincinnati Bengals from increasing their lead in the AFC North. Possibly getting Cedric Benson back Sunday for a meeting with the lowly Cleveland Browns might be just what they need to bounce back.

Cincinnati (7-3) opened the season with a 16-12 loss to Denver after giving up a fluky 87-yard touchdown catch with 11 seconds left. The Bengals then surprisingly won seven of eight, posting an 18-12 victory at Pittsburgh on Nov. 15 to move into sole possession of first in the division.

They were in prime position to expand that lead last Sunday as the other three teams in the North lost, but the Bengals gave up 10 points in the final 33 seconds to fall 20-17 at Oakland. Cincinnati committed eight penalties, fumbled three times and missed a field goal to see its three-game winning streak come to an end. (more…)

Can Bengals Cut Mustard At Heinz?

Colts Bengals Football

Why did Chad Ochocinco want to send mustard to the Pittsburgh Steelers?

Because he didn’t think they could “ketch-up.”

Unfortuanately for Chad, Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis will not allow the WR to send anything to the Steelers seeing as the two battle for top spot in the AFC North Sunday–both currently are sporting 6-2 records.

The Steelers are favored by a TD, the Total has been set at 42 and in the last 11 times they’ve hosted the Bengals, the Over has cashed 8 times.

Pittsburgh really doesn’t need any bulletin board material as it, like its regular season record, is 6-2 SU and ATS in the last eight overall games against Cincinnati.(source)

Bengals sweep Ravens, have sights set on A-North

nfl

For all the attention directed at the Cincinnati Bengals’ offense during their 5-2 start, questions have often followed about the defense’s tendency to dig holes or jeopardize leads.

However, no one was voicing those doubts following Sunday’s 17-7 win vs. Baltimore.

The Bengals’ beleaguered defense allowed only a fourth-quarter scoring drive and sealed the victory with three consecutive sacks of quarterback Joe Flacco during the Ravens’ comeback bid. Cincinnati held the league’s No. 3 team in third-down conversions (48.4%) to just one in 10 tries and 215 total yards while forcing two turnovers.

That’s the type of defense Baltimore was known for not long ago.

“When you’re playing the Ravens, the best defense on the field that day is going to win,” Bengals cornerback Leon Hall said. “You focus on the offense, but you look on the defensive side of the ball and just try to play better than them. It was just guys out there making plays.”

As a result the Bengals (6-2) earned, not only their best start in 20 years, but a season sweep of the Ravens and most importantly, first place in the AFC North pending Pittsburgh’s outcome Monday night at Denver. They also improved to 4-0 in the division.

Baltimore (4-4) was left with its fourth loss in five games and little hope of winning the division. (more…)
