NFL Player Dead At 26

nflGaines Adams, 26, an all-American defensive end at Clemson whose career never blossomed in the NFL with Chicago and Tampa Bay, died yesterday in Greenwood, S.C., after going into cardiac arrest.

He died at Self Regional Hospital after going into cardiac arrest about an hour before at his family’s home, said Marcia Kelley-Clark, chief deputy coroner for Greenwood County.

An autopsy showed an enlarged heart, a condition that can often lead to a heart attack, Kelley-Clark added. She said relatives were unaware of any medical condition. (more…)

Brett Favre A Step Close To Super Bowl XLIV

nflA ferocious defence helped Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings get past the Dallas Cowboys and set up an NFC Championship showdown on Sunday with the New Orleans Saints.

The Vikings overwhelmed Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, sacking him six times, intercepting one pass and throwing the whole Dallas offence off balance to let 40-year-old quarterback Favre engineer a comprehensive victory at Mall of America Field.

It was a torrid afternoon for Romo, who committed three fumbles, twice turning the ball over to the Vikings for whom opposite number Favre was faultless. (more…)

What NFL Team Was The Most Disappointing?

nflThe upcoming AFC and NFC title games are destined to be classics if only to help get the bad taste out of our mouths from this past weekend.

Brett Favre, Reggie Bush and the Jets defense aside, it would be hard to imagine a collection of four games more disappointing after all the hype that led up to them.

20-3. 45-14. 34-3. 17-14.

Who could have imagined there would be two teams unable to score a playoff touchdown and that the Dallas Cowboys would be calling a team classless for running up the score. (more…)

Jets Join Power Teams In NFL’s Final Four

nflRest trumped rust, fresh legs stomped most of the momentum, and the NFL’s two conference championship games Sunday will feature three of the league’s top four seeds, with the New York Jets the only upstart able to crash the party of favorites.

Many in the league’s elite entered this past weekend’s divisional round having stumbled into their playoff bye over the regular season’s final weeks as they rested high-profile players, lost games and were hit with criticism along the way.

The New Orleans Saints lost their last three games of the regular season. The Indianapolis Colts lost their last two. And the Minnesota Vikings lost three of their last five. But the big dogs came off the NFL’s porch for the most part, and the conference championship games now include both No. 1 seeds (Saints and Colts) to go with a No. 2 seed (Vikings). (more…)

Was This The End Of The Patriots Era Atop The NFL?

nflWas the Patriots’ loss to the Ravens in Sunday’s wild-card loss an epitaph to the franchise’s run atop the NFL for the past decade?

After Sunday’s game, Ravens WR Kelley Washington, a former Patriots player, yelled out: “The era is over!”

Is it so? Consider:

* The Patriots, lauded in many corners as the NFL’s team of the 2000s, have now gone five straight seasons without a Super Bowl title. (more…)

Steelers Will Have Different Look In 2010

nflThe Pittsburgh Steelers began their offseason much earlier than expected after failing to make the playoffs for only the third time in nine seasons. Chances are, they will be a different team in a few months.

The one constant in the NFL is that nothing stays the same and that’s particularly true when the results aren’t acceptable. For the Steelers, not reaching the playoffs a season after winning the Super Bowl was unacceptable.

Head coach Mike Tomlin fired the first two salvos last week when special teams coordinator Bob Ligashesky and offensive line coach Larry Zierlein were fired. Those will likely be the only changes on the coaching staff, but the roster will have a very different look next season.

“One thing I will acknowledge is that things rarely stay the same,” said Tomlin. “You’ve got to proceed with that assumption in mind.” (more…)

Warner Reportedly Tempted To Retire

nflArizona’s Kurt Warner is leaning strongly toward retirement at the end of the Cardinals’ playoff run,  reported last night, quoting sources close to the quarterback.

Warner, 38, certainly didn’t look like a guy on his last legs yesterday when he threw five touchdown passes without an interception in a 51-45 overtime victory against Green Bay.

Arizona will play the Saints in New Orleans on Saturday.

Warner has been voted to five Pro Bowls, winning two MVP awards and one Super Bowl. He is one of just two quarterbacks to throw more than 100 touchdown passes for two NFL franchises. (Fran Tarkenton was the other.) Warner led the Cardinals to a surprise Super Bowl appearance last winter, when they lost to Pittsburgh. (more…)

Seahawks very close to signing Carroll

nflPete Carroll is about to sign a contract to coach the Seattle Seahawks, according to a league official with direct knowledge of the coaching search.

The official, who requested anonymity because the team isn’t detailing the search, said Sunday night that the USC coach has “not signed but (is) very close.”

The official told that the Seahawks expect to finish the deal for the eighth coach in their 34-year history this morning, and all that was left was to “dot the I’s and cross the T’s.” The official said that barring last-minute hang-ups, the Seahawks are likely to introduce Carroll on Tuesday or Wednesday. NFL apparel fight could have big impact

nflA hat can be a small thing.

Then there’s the Supreme Court battle over who gets to make official NFL headgear. It could end up having a very large effect not only on all professional sports, but also the landscape of business in the United States.

“Make no mistake about it, this case is about more than just hats,” said DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the National Football League Players Association.

The high court will hear arguments Wednesday from a former NFL apparel maker seeking to overturn rulings that the National Football League is one business, not 32 separate teams working together, and therefore immune to an antitrust complaint. (more…)

Ravens Beat Patriots in NFL Playoffs

nflRay Rice scored two rushing touchdowns in a 24-point first quarter as the Baltimore Ravens beat the New England Patriots 33-14 to advance to the second round of the National Football League playoffs.

The Ravens (10-7) will face the top-seeded Indianapolis Colts (14-2) next week for a spot in the American Football Conference championship game. The New York Jets (10-7), who beat the Cincinnati Bengals 24-14 yesterday, will visit the San Diego Chargers (13-3) in the other AFC second-round playoff matchup.

“We’ve got a big challenge in front of us in the Colts,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said during his post-game news conference.

Rice had an 83-yard touchdown run on the first offensive play of the game at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, while Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had three turnovers that led to 17 of Baltimore’s first-quarter points. (more…)
