Is the NFL Pro Bowl Broken?

nflIt’s hard to argue in favor of an All-Star game where the league’s seventh best player at his position makes the cut, let alone make the case for watching it. This weekend, football fans will be programming their DVRs — most likely, to record some other channel — when David Garrard, quarterback for the 7-9 Jacksonville Jaguars, plods onto the field.

Contain your excitement if you can: it’s time for the Pro Bowl, the NFL’s woeful attempt to match the popularity of baseball and basketball’s all-star games. (more…)

Super Bowl New Orleans Saints Vs. Indianapolis Colts Preview

nfl hotTwo teams that went perfect until a late season collapse. Two teams with a high-powered offense and a mediocre defense. And two teams with the best QBs in the league about to face off in what will be one of the greatest Super Bowl’s of all time.

With the Saints overtime win over the Vikings, the Saints are riding a wave of momentum. Yes, they are lucky that Brett Favre threw an interception on a play which could have easily won them the game. Yes, they weren’t playing their best. But the only thing that matters is that they are in the Super Bowl. (more…)

Breaking Down The Colts And Saints Running Game

nflThe Indianapolis Colts have two very good running backs in Joseph Addai and Donald Brown but the stats don’t show it.  The problem for the Colts is that their offensive line has been built to pass block and not to run block.

The Colts’ entire offensive game plan is based around Peyton Manning throwing pinpoint passes to Reggie Wayne, Austin Collie, Pierre Garcon and Dallas Clark.  The Colts did out rush the New York Jets in the AFC Championship Game, but don’t expect Indy to out rush the Saints in the Super Bowl. (more…)

Hometown NFL Player Heading To Super Bowl

nflA hometown sports hero is heading to the Super Bowl after helping the Indianapolis Colts win the AFC Championship on Sunday.

Rookie NFL wide receiver Austin Collie had a career-high seven catches for 123 yards during the game against the New York Jets, including a 16-yard touchdown pass from Peyton Manning that put the Colts ahead in the first half.

Chris Jones, Austin’s football coach at Oak Ridge, got a text from the Colts #17 after his victory at the AFC championship: “Are we serious right now!” (more…)

Indianapolis Colts Are Early Super Bowl XLIV Pick

nflSuper Bowl XLIV will feature the NFL’s most prolific offense this season — Drew Brees and his New Orleans Saints — against the NFL’s best offense when it counts — Peyton Manning and his Indianapolis Colts.

My pick will be the 4-point favored Colts, mainly because the Saints usually need takeaways to beat the elite teams and Manning and Co. do a good job protecting the football. (more…)

Indianapolis Colts March To Super Bowl 2010

nflThis is perfect for the Indianapolis Colts: They have Peyton Manning and they’re back in the Super Bowl.

The four-time MVP threw three touchdown passes and the Colts rallied from an 11-point, first-half deficit to beat the New York Jets 30-17 Sunday in the AFC championship game.

The Colts (16-2) are now headed back to the NFL title game for the second time in four years and their fourth Super Bowl in franchise history. (more…)

NFL Conference Title Predictions

nfl hotWent 2-2 last week, same as wild card weekend in that I was perfect on Saturday and whiffed on Sunday. I now stand at 180-84 (all games straight up). More importantly, I’m up four with three games to play.

The Jets will win if … They win the turnover battle (an absolute must), churn up clock and yards on the ground and find ways to limit Dallas Clark and make the Colts thoroughly one-dimensional by taking away the run. (more…)

Shootout Expected In NFC Championship Game

NFL GirlNow that the title games are set for the AFC and the NFC, analysts have already started to weigh in on the match ups, and the different styles that will be played. The NFC game is expected to be a high scoring affair.

There is not much of an argument that can be made that the New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings were not the two best teams in the NFC for most of the year. Although the Saints are the number one seed, there are many who believe that Minnesota may be the more balanced team. (more…)

Jets Fly In As The Surprise Of NFL’s Conference Finals

nflSomething strange took place most of the weekend in the NFL playoffs. Namely, the expected.

Seeding had not meant much lately in the conference semifinals. Over the previous four seasons, higher-seeded teams were only 7-9 in this round of the postseason. But on Saturday, No. 1 seeds New Orleans and Indianapolis won big. On Sunday, No. 2 seed Minnesota did the same, and then San Diego, the AFC’s No. 2 seed, took a 7-0 lead and controlled things early against the New York Jets. (more…)
