New York Jets 7-16 Victory Over Carolina Panthers

nflDarrelle Revis saw the ball deflect off Steve Smith’s foot and float right into his hands.

Finally, the New York Jets thought, a lucky bounce that went their way.

Revis returned one of the Jets’ four interceptions 67 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and New York overcame an injury scare to quarterback Mark Sanchez before holding on to beat the Carolina Panthers 17-6 on Sunday.

“That was a sigh of relief,” Revis said of his early touchdown. “That was an easy score right there. It doesn’t get any better than that to start us off.”

Thomas Jones had a 3-yard touchdown run as the Jets (5-6) won at home for the first time since beating Tennessee in Week 3, sending the Panthers (4-7) to their second straight loss. (more…)

Carolina Panthers Vs. New York Jets Week12 NFL Match Preview

nflComing off a season when they tied for the best record in the NFC, the Carolina Panthers clearly expected to return to the playoffs. Instead, injuries and poor play are dimming those postseason hopes.

The Panthers will try to overcome an injury-ravaged defense Sunday when they visit the New York Jets, another team fading in the playoff race.

Carolina (4-6) went 12-4 last season, winning the NFC South and matching the New York Giants for the best record in the conference. That success was muted when the Panthers were upset in the divisional playoffs, falling 33-13 to Arizona.

Despite that disappointment, the Panthers were expected to mount another run at the division title this season.

Things haven’t worked out that way. (more…)

Carolina won with 28-19 about Atlanta in Week10 NFL Match

Box Score Carolina 28 and Atlanta 19

The Carolina Panthers might have finally found a way to solve Jake Delhomme’s woes: controlled chaos.

A heavy dose of miscues from Matt Ryan and banged-up Atlanta didn’t hurt, either.

The Panthers unleashed a no-huddle offense on Sunday with Delhomme calling the plays, and it produced two touchdown passes to Steve Smith, no turnovers and a 28-19 victory over the Falcons.”No huddle is controlled chaos,” said Smith, who tripled Carolina’s touchdown total by wide receivers coming into the game. “You’ve got defense running around and they don’t know what they’re doing. The no huddle is really easy and simple.”

While Delhomme went turnover-free for the third straight game following 13 interceptions in his first six, it was a difficult day for Ryan and the Falcons (5-4). First, they lost running back Michael Turner to a second-quarter sprained ankle after he already rushed for 111 yards. Then kicker Jason Elam and Ryan stymied their late comeback hopes with key fourth-quarter mistakes.Ryan, throwing too high much of the day, had two more interceptions He’s at 12, one more than all of his stellar rookie season.”I’m young,” Ryan said. “I’ve got a long way to go, a lot of improving to do and a lot of things to learn.”With Ryan completing only 7 of 19 passes in the first half, the Panthers (4-5) built a 21-10 halftime lead.

Delhomme looked poised and the Falcons struggled to get the right defensive personnel on the field.Delhomme, no longer the NFL leader in interceptions after Jay Cutler’s struggles with Chicago, found Smith on a pair of 4-yard TDs and was in his comfort zone. Much of Delhomme’s best work over the years has come in the 2-minute offense.”That is something that we practice a good bit,” Delhomme said of the no-huddle. “I’m extremely comfortable in that situation.”The Panthers’ offense wasn’t as successful after halftime, and the game wasn’t sealed until Richard Marshall picked off Ryan, setting up Jonathan Stewart’s 45-yard touchdown run with 2:07 left.Earlier, Elam missed a 34-yard field goal that would have given Atlanta the lead. It allowed the Panthers to hold on despite losing the cog of their offensive line, left tackle Jordan Gross, to a broken right ankle.”I think we were at a major crossroad in the season being 3-5,” said receiver Muhsin Muhammad, who had six catches for 91 yards in his return from a knee injury. “If you look at the playoff picture, we have as good a chance as anybody else with seven games left in the season. Atlanta Falcons vs Carolina Panthers NFL Match Week 10 Predictions

nfl

The Carolina Panthers host the Atlanta Falcons, Sunday Nov 15, as two NFC South squads battle it out. The Falcons have won their last two regular season games over the Panthers.

The Falcons (5-3) beat Washington 31-17 at home in Week 9 and now sit second in the NFC South. QB Matt Ryan made 17 of 24 passes for 135 yards with one TD pass and one interception; overall he’s thrown for 1,784 yards with 13 TD passes and 10 interceptions for a 82.2 passer rating. RB Michael Turner had 18 carries for 166 yards with two TD’s, while TE Tony Gonzalez made five catches for 41 yards with a TD. Their defense pulled down one interception and had five sacks on the day. The Falcons 16th overall offense will be up against a tough ninth ranked Panthers defense , that’s ranked sixth against the pass. The Falcons must get their 11th ranked running game in high gear against the Panthers 23rd ranked rush defense. On defense they’ll have to stop Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams, who leads his squad with seven TD’s and 768 yards rushing. He’s averaged 153 yards rushing in back to back games. The Falcons average 25.2ppg and give up 20.8ppg, while they are 1-3 SU on the road where they average 25.8ppg and allow 27ppg. They are 6-2 ATS and 5-3 over/under.

The Panthers (3-5) lost in New Orleans 20-30 in Week 9 and still sit third in the NFC South. QB Jake Delhomme made 17 of 30 passes for 201 yards with no TD’s or interceptions; overall he’s thrown for 1,463 yards with five TD passes and 12 interceptions for a 61.7 passer rating. RB DeAngelo Williams had 21 carries for 149 yards with two TD’s while WR Steve Smith made four catches for 64 yards. Their defense struggled with one sack and interception. Their offense went 1 for 4 in the red zone as they continue to struggle. It’ll be run n gun for the Panthers third ranked running game , while their pass game struggles lowly ranked 25th. QB Delhomme has thrown more interceptions than TD’s and there’s a good chance Falcons Safety Thomas DeCoud could add to his two interceptions. The Panthers average 18.5ppg and give up 24.5ppg, while they are 1-2 SU at home where they average 13ppg and allow 25ppg. They are 3-5 ATS and 4-4 over/under. (more…)

NFL News: Panthers WR Smith mum on injury, hopes to play Week 1

NFL News: Steve Smith slowly walked across the Wofford College campus Tuesday with his right arm in a sling, facing the prospect that he’ll miss several weeks of the preseason.

The Carolina Panthers’ star wide receiver was subdued yet also relieved that his shoulder injury wasn’t more serious. “I thought it was broke,” Smith said, “because it started hurting immediately.”

Smith’s collision with cornerback Chris Gamble and the ensuing hard fall Monday night in a passing drill during a non-padded practice produced murmurs in the Panthers’ unlucky training camp.

One week after starting defensive tackle Maake Kemoeatu was lost for the season with a torn Achilles’ tendon, Carolina coaches and players watched their top playmaker kick his helmet in frustration before being carted to the locker room.

X-rays on Smith’s arm were negative, and while the four-time Pro Bowler declined to say if he had separated his shoulder, he appeared confident that he’ll be ready for the regular-season opener Sept. 13 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I would hope so,” Smith said. “Once again, I left that (medical) degree at home. so I don’t know the timetable at which I’ll be full go.”

While the Panthers always are secretive with injuries — Smith wouldn’t even say if he would have an MRI — there was a sense that they avoided a major pitfall after seeing Smith’s right shoulder slam to the turf.

“We were doing one-on-ones,” Smith said. “Two competitors going after the ball, accidents happen. I know, I spoke to (Gamble) and I know it wasn’t a malicious act or trying to do it personally.

“But I was still upset, because going through camp, whether you’re nine years or one year, no one wants to get hurt. That same time, they want to get through camp peacefully and injury free so you can go into the season without little things nagging.”

Smith has a history of shoulder trouble, dating to a 2007 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Last year, he fell hard on his right shoulder during a preseason victory over the Washington Redskins, but it didn’t force him to miss any games. This time, Smith could miss the entire preseason.

“We had breakfast this morning, and he was a lot more sore this morning, but that’s to be expected,” quarterback Jake Delhomme said of Smith. “He’ll be fine. I know he’ll get frustrated and aggravated, but I think we all would. You don’t come to camp to sit and watch.”

Barely a week into camp at Wofford, the Panthers have suffered injuries to the two areas in which they had the least depth. While Nick Hayden, with two games of NFL experience, has replaced the run-stuffing Kemoeatu, the Panthers have similar inexperience behind Smith.

Fellow starting receiver Muhsin Muhammad was switched to Smith’s “X” position in Carolina’s offense at practice Tuesday. Dwayne Jarrett, who has caught 16 passes without a touchdown in two disappointing NFL seasons, was elevated to the first unit in Muhammad’s old spot.

Behind them are rookies, castoffs and players trying to return from injuries, ranging from Ryne Robinson and Jason Carter to Kenneth Moore and Larry Beavers. They’ll have plenty of reps beginning in Monday’s preseason opener at the New York Giants.

“It’s time for some of these guys to shine,” Delhomme said. “This is their deal. This is it. If they don’t embrace it, then they’re not the type of players we think they are. But I think they will embrace it.”

The Panthers hope they won’t depend on the group of no-names for long.

Smith’s explosive speed and big-play ability were credited in helping open up Carolina’s running game last season. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart combined to rush for 2,351 yards and 28 touchdowns, the best 1-2 punch in the NFL.

Despite being suspended for the first two games last season for breaking teammate Ken Lucas’ nose in a training-camp fight, Smith still finished with 78 catches for 1,421 yards and six touchdowns and made his fourth Pro Bowl.

Known for his acrobatic catches and breakaway speed, Smith vowed that his aggressive style won’t change when he returns.

“I’m not concerned about being limited or any of that stuff,” Smith said. “I think when I get back out there, the mobility of it, it will not impede me from catching the ball.”

NFL News: Panthers WR Smith injured after collision with teammate

NFL News: X-rays negative after Panthers’ Smith injures shoulder during drill

Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith was carted to the locker room with a right shoulder injury Monday night, the latest blow to another key player in an injury-filled start to training camp.

X-rays were negative, but general manager Marty Hurney was uncertain how long the four-time Pro Bowl receiver will be out. Smith was injured when he got tangled with cornerback Chris Gamble early in the evening workout, held without pads.

Seeing one of the NFL’s top receivers wincing in pain produced some tense moments for the Panthers, a week after they lost starting defensive tackle Maake Kemoeatu for the season due to a torn Achilles’ tendon.

This injury doesn’t appear to be as serious, but could keep Smith out for a while.

Smith crumpled to the turf and grabbed his right arm after a slight collision with Gamble in a passing drill. He took off his helmet and kicked it before walking to a nearby tent, favoring his right shoulder.

Smith was briefly treated before being carted inside, where he underwent X-rays. It wasn’t immediately clear if Smith would be taken to Charlotte to be further evaluated. Smith had 78 catches for 1,421 yards and six touchdowns last season and is the top target of quarterback Jake Delhomme. Smith, who turned 30 earlier this year, is Carolina’s franchise leader with 51 touchdown catches.

The Panthers have little proven depth behind him. The other starter is 36-year-old Muhsin Muhammad. Dwayne Jarrett, who has caught 16 passes in his first two seasons, is the leading candidate to be the No. 3 receiver this season.

Linebacker Jon Beason returned to practice after missing nine workouts because of a strained left hamstring. Fellow starter Thomas Davis remained sidelined due to a sprained right knee.
