NFL-Sanchez Given Start in Jets’ Next Game

The rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez, coming off an impressive first NFL game, will start the Jets’ preseason game at Baltimore next Monday.

Sanchez’s start had been planned before the preseason, but Coach Rex Ryan Ryan spoke glowingly of him Sunday, giving a clear indication of how far Sanchez’s star had risen.

“I think he earned the reps with the 1s and all that,” Ryan said. Referring to the plans to start Sanchez against the Ravens, he added: “It might have been done on paper that way in pencil, but he had to earn it. The guy had to earn his reps, and I think he’s done that.”

Many fans and members of the news media seem to believe that Sanchez has already taken a significant lead in the competition with quarterback Kellen Clemens to be the Jets’ starter.

“I’d say the good thing about that is that it’s an outsider’s opinion,” Clemens said. “It’s an insider who’s going to make the ultimate decision.”

How the quarterbacks perform against the Ravens’ stout defense could go a long way toward helping Ryan make that decision.

“Well, yeah, if you do anything against that bunch, you could move it against anybody,” Ryan said, referring to the Ravens’ defense. “It would count more than moving it against St. Louis. No disrespect to St. Louis, but they ain’t the Ravens and they’re not Pittsburgh.”

Clemens started the preseason opener, a 23-20 loss to the St. Louis Rams, on Friday. Sanchez came into the game with 28 seconds left in the first quarter; his first play was a 48-yard pass to David Clowney.

He finished 3 of 4 for 88 yards in one series, which ended in a 1-yard touchdown dive by Thomas Jones.

“He actually performed like I thought he would,” Ryan said of Sanchez. “He let his teammates work and, shoot, they drove it right down the field.”

Clemens was solid in the opener, but he lacked big plays or a star presence.

“I’m in a competition with a guy who obviously has some pretty serious ability,” Clemens said. “I don’t rank myself all that low, either.”

NFL Gambling – NFL Previews – NFC East

Is the NFC East the best division in football? We just had this conversation in the office and there were a lot of points made for that being the case and points made against that being the case.

Remember, last year the Eagles were upset by the Cardinals in the NFC East Conference Championship and the rest of the division was either gone earlier or irrelevant come playoff time. The Giants won the Super Bowl two years ago, but the Redskins and Cowboys haven’t been significant factors in the post-season for years.

A case can be made that the NFC South, despite the down cycle in Tampa Bay, is a tougher division and of the AFC South is in the mix (if Jacksonville can regain their form).

Online sportsbook SPORTSBETTING.com has posted the NFL odds for the Super Bowl and for the divisional crowns. The NFC East is well represented at the top of the Super Bowl future odds betting menu.

Let’s have a look at some of those odds:

Super Bowl Odds

Washington Redskins 40 – 1

Seattle Seahawks 40 – 1

Green Bay Packers 28 – 1

Arizona Cardinals 25 – 1

Atlanta Falcons 22 – 1

Baltimore Ravens 22 – 1

Carolina Panthers 22 – 1

Chicago Bears 20 – 1

New Orleans Saints 20 – 1

Tennessee Titans 18 – 1

Minnesota Vikings 16 – 1

Dallas Cowboys 15 – 1

San Diego Chargers 14 – 1

Indianapolis Colts 14 – 1

Philadelphia Eagles 14 – 1

New York Giants 11 – 1

Pittsburgh Steelers 10 – 1

New England Patriots 6 – 1

Judging by the respect the NFC East receives from the bettors and oddsmakers, they are the best division in football, as all four of their teams are in the top 18 when it comes to the Super Bowl odds.

- You can see the full list of Super Bowl odds at SPORTSBETTING.com

But it’s not as simple as looking at the NFL future odds lists to determine which division is the best. That said, it is a good indicator. The Redskins, as always lately, are expected to finish last, according to experts and the lines posted by the online sportsbook. But every year they are able to climb above expectations and slide ahead of one of their division rivals. This year’s target could well be the Dallas Cowboys.

This off-season you could see a shift in the balance of power in the division, as the Eagles had a great off-season and to me, are the team to beat. I’m concerned about the loss of Dawkins, but this defense should be able to absorb his departure.

Donovan McNabb looked good last year and all indications are he is going to be strong this year.

The odds from SPORTSBETTING.com on the Eagles to win the NFC East division are 12-5.

I like the Eagles to win the division. The Cowboys are certainly talented on both sides of the ball, but that isn’t going to be enough. The coaching staff, Tony Romo, question marks at receiver and their mental toughness are all issues that need to be worked out. I can’t see them finishing ahead of the Eagles and Giants.

Here are the NFC East Odds

Washington Redskins 11 – 2

Dallas Cowboys 12 – 5

Philadelphia Eagles 12 – 5

New York Giants 13 – 8

Next week I’ll finish up my thoughts on the NFC East and look at the NFC South.

The NFL’s Top Five Defensemen by Division

Part two of my series takes us to what has been one of the most competitive divisions in NFL football—the NFC East.

This division may be one of the strongest defensively, even more than the stifling defenses in the AFC North. All of my selections are pass rushers—either lining up with their hand in the ground as a lineman, or as an outside linebacker.

Interestingly enough, the Eagles, Giants, and Cowboys all ranked within the top six in group sacks last season. The Giants recently won a Super Bowl, and just last year they held the NFC’s best record. They were disappointingly bounced out of the playoffs in their first matchup against the division rival Eagles. Their defense was dealt a huge blow by the departure of defensive draftsman Steve Spagnuolo, but their personnel still figures to be one of the most talented groups in football.

The Cowboys led the league last season in sacks, and actually gained a lot of ground once Wade Phillips took over the defensive play-calling duties. They have plenty of room for improvement, but look to expand on their progress from last season and dominate the division.

The Eagles made it all the way to the NFC Championship game, only to lose in dramatic fashion to the Cardinals. Their defense was stifling against the run, allowing a paltry 3.5 yards per carry and a total of 1,476 yards on the ground all season. The defense may be without the aide of its star signal caller, Jimmy Johnson, which could drastically effect a defense playing without the greatest talent in the league. The Redskins acquired free agent defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth after a huge skid ended their season at an unremarkable 8-8 record following a 6-2 start. I’ve mentioned the dismal defensive stats down the stretch last season—they gave up more than 20 points in five of their last eight games, after allowing 20+ points only twice in their first eight.

2009 NFL Win Totals Odds–Over/Under Total Team Wins Odds

The 2009 NFL Season will be here before football fans know it and oddsmakers have released the season win total odds for all 32 teams.

Bet NFL Season Odds

Perhaps the most intriguing season odds of any of the 32 NFL teams is the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, who have been given an over/under total of 10.5, which seems rather low. The Steelers should once again have a dominant defense and as long as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger stays healthy, Pittsburgh should be able to lock in on 11 wins, especially since they play the Cincinnati Bengals (o/u 6.5) and Cleveland Browns (o/u 7) being in the same division.

Not surprisingly, the New England Patriots have been given a season win total of 11.5 games. With Tom Brady expected back to full health after missing virtually all of the 2008 season, the Pats are once again expected to run through the competition in the AFC and once again compete for a Super Bowl title.

The team that beat the Patriots in the 2008 Super Bowl, the New York Giants, have been given a season win total of 10 wins according to oddsmakers. While 10 wins might be a low number for a team with the best season total odds in the NFC, remember that the G-Men play in the same division as the Philadelphia Eagles (o/u9.5), the Dallas Cowboys (o/u 9) and the Washington Redskins (o/u 8).

Some other quality teams with intriguing odds are the AFC East defending champion Miami Dolphins (o/u 7), the upstart Atlanta Falcons (o/u 8.5), and the now Jay Cutler-led Chicago Bears (o/u 8.5).

Remembering McNair For Way He Played

Never in a million years would most Tennessee Titans fans, or N.F.L. fans, have guessed that Steve McNair’s life would end violently, under compromising circumstances.

As a quarterback, McNair was a quintessential N.F.L. hero. The lasting football image of McNair is his marching his team the length of the field for a winning score, his thumb injured, sternum bruised and ribs cracked. But now McNair, who was 36, has died in what the police say was a homicide, alongside a woman who was also shot to death in his rented condominium in Nashville.

McNair specialized in climbing the seemingly nonnegotiable hill, slipping from behind the eight-ball and winning when no one expected a victory.

In Super Bowl XXXIV, McNair led the Titans to one of the great comebacks in Super Bowl history. Tennessee was losing by 16-0 when McNair rallied the Titans to tie the score before falling behind again. On the final plays of the game, his team trailing by a touchdown, McNair avoided one wave of tacklers, then shook off two other tacklers to keep the drive alive before connecting with Kevin Dyson, who came up a yard short of a touchdown. Tennessee lost, but McNair emerged with an enhanced reputation for toughness and verve.

“They give you respect for getting up, getting knocked down,” Doug Williams, a former N.F.L. quarterback who is now a scout for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, said by phone Sunday. “Everybody who remembers Steve McNair is going to remember that pound for pound, he’s the toughest guy who ever played the position.”

Williams was the most valuable player of Super Bowl XXII and is still the only African-American quarterback to win a Super Bowl. He said that McNair, Donovan McNabb and Warren Moon tore down lingering stereotypical perceptions of African-Americans who played quarterback, the most exalted position in sports.

“The way he played, he was one of the best field generals that you’re going to have, no matter what color he was,” Williams said.

Jacksonville Jaguars 2009 NFL Predictions & 2010 Super Bowl Odds, win Total

One of the worst things a football team can do is a read their own press clippings. That is precisely what happened to the Jacksonville Jaguars last season when they fell on their faces with a 5-11 season after going 12-4 in 07’. Change was necessary and Jacksonville head coach Jack Del Rio has brought in 6 new starters and a new defensive coordinator. Del Rio better hope for a quick turnaround or else he could end up resting with the fishes off the Florida coast as a football coach. The NFL predictions odds for the Jacksonville Jaguars to win the 2010 Super Bowl is listed at 38-1 odds.

Jacksonville lost their all-time leading rusher in Fred Taylor last season and will rely mostly on RB Maurice Jones-Drew to power the offense. Jones-Drew is a punishing runner that has excellent hands out of the backfield, but Jones-Drew has durability and fumbling issues. The O-Line was awful last year but some strong aciquistions should solidify the unit. The passing game is of the dink and dunk variety with ball-control styled QB David Garrard. Garrard is a durable and athletic player, but he is not much of a leader and has limited field vision. The wideout corps is not going to scare anyone without a true difference maker. The NFL predictions odds for the Jacksonville Jaguars to win the AFC championship is at 18-1 odds.

The Jacksonville defense once was one of the main factors to their success and seems to have taken a few steps back in recent years. Jaguars Head Coach Jack Del Rio is a smash-mouth type of coach that depends on his defenders to keep games low-scoring. Last year Jacksonville ranked 21st in points allowed and showed weaknesses across the board. Jacksonville still has a playmaking big man in the middle with DT John Henderson, but the loss of run-stuffing DT Marcus Stroud next to him was felt last year.  Now a leadership void must be filled at MLB with the loss of Mike Peterson. The secondary has playmaking skills with stud FS Reggie Nelson leading the charge but has underachieved overall.

For Jacksonville to return to the playoffs they will need for their team chemistry and defense to raise up a few notches.  QB David Garrard is a solid player but does not adjust well when things around him break down. The key on the offensive side of the football will be for the O-Line to keep Garrard’s jersey clean. With many questions unanswered going into the season it is hard to imagine Jacksonville winning more than 6 games in the tough AFC South. The  NFL predictions odds on the season Win Total for the Jacksonville Jaguars is at 8.0 Wins.

Indianapolis Colts 2009 NFL Predictions & 2010 Super Bowl Odds

Indianapolis Colts 2009 NFL Predictions, Win Total & 2010 Super Bowl Odds: The more things change the more they will stay the same for the 2009 Indianapolis Colts. Gone is head coach Tony Dungy and Marvin Harrison, but that will not keep the resilient Colts from reaching the playoffs for the 12th time in 13 years. New head coach Jim Caldwell will stick to the same winning formula that Dungy used, don’t make mistakes and pick spots to take risks. Peyton Manning is hungry for another Super Bowl ring and he might just get it. The NFL predictions odds for the Indianapolis Colts to win the 2010 Super Bowl is listed at 11-1 odds

A bum knee kept Peyton Manning from being his normal unstoppable self in 2008. Manning is the best QB in the NFL and will be at 100% which means he will light up the scoreboard. The O-Line is a top-10 unit that protects Manning very-well and should be able to keep him on the field. Former Colts WR Marvin Harrison was a great player but he was past his prime and his replacement Anthony Gonzalez could actuallly be an upgrade. Opposite of Gonzalez, Reggie Wayne is an All-Pro with great skills. TE Dallas Clark is one of the pass-catching tight ends in the NFL and has deep speed.  Joseph Addai and rookie Donald Brown are excellent speed running backs that should help the Colts ground game improve last year’s 31st ranked rushing offense.

The Colts have an undersized defense that will be more aggressive under new coordinator Larry Coyle. Coyle will use Dungy’s same Tampa-2 scheme and depends on his players to make smart reads. DE’s Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis form the most dangerous pass-rushing duo in the NFL off the edge. The Colts front seven is fast, but at times the Colts defenders get blown off the ball, leaving gaping holes in the running game.  The Colts secondary is one the best in the NFL. Special Teams always seems to be a weakness for Indy and this year is no different. The NFL Football predictions odds for the Indianapolis Colts to win the AFC championship is at 11-2 odds.

The AFC South is arguably the best division in the AFC and the Colts are top of the class. The Colts are an aging team but they have enough in the tank to make it back to the Superbowl. The NFL predictions odds on the season Win Total for the Indianapolis Colts is at 10.5 Wins.

NFL player-Greg Jennings Gets Reward,Time To Earn Another pay Day

It took most of the offseason, but Greg Jennings and his agent got what they wanted from the  Green Bay Packers.

The three-year contract extension the rising receiver signed on Wednesday financially sets up him and his family for life — and also gives Jennings the chance for another big-time payday before he turns 30.

“That’s the beauty of it,” Jennings said shortly after the Packers announced the deal, which contains roughly $16 million in guarantees.

“Kudos to my agent — Eugene Parker is one of the top agents at doing what he does best, and that’s negotiating contracts. That was pretty much our game plan, if there is to be a career after this contract. Again, I can’t tell the future, but that was definitely the game plan, to make it a situation where I would have another opportunity to go to the table and redo a deal.”

Added onto the remaining year of his rookie deal, the extension — which could pay Jennings in the neighborhood of $30 million if he earns all incentives — runs through the 2012 season.

Jennings, 25, will be 29 when his new deal expires. So, he’ll be young enough at a position with a relatively short shelf life that a team probably wouldn’t hesitate to invest top dollar if his career continues its upward trajectory.

It’s also possible the Packers will be in the same position again three years from now, willing to extend their top offensive threat with a year to go on his contract.

All that depends on Jennings’ performance, which has improved markedly in each of his three NFL Football Seasons. After battling injuries while catching 45 passes for 632 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie, Jennings broke out in 2007 (53 catches, 920 yards, 12 touchdowns) and then surpassed veteran Donald Driver as the Packers’ No. 1 receiver last season, when he played in all 16 games for the first time and finished with 80 catches for 1,292 yards and nine scores.

“We’re excited for Greg Jennings’ future here — there is no doubt,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “I think Greg is a young man that has developed here in Green Bay, and I can’t say enough about him personally. I like the way he goes about his business, and he is definitely well-deserving of this contract.”

A former second-round draft pick (52nd overall) in 2006 who was due to make only $535,000 this season under his old deal, Jennings acknowledged there was “definitely a sense of urgency” to do a deal because of the NFL ’s uncertain labor situation. If a new collective bargaining agreement isn’t in place by the start of the 2010 league year, the salary cap would disappear and players with fewer than six accrued seasons — Jennings would have only four — would become ineligible for unrestricted free agency.

Rather than take a chance, the married father of two agreed to terms on a deal that makes him the Packers’ second-highest-paid player, behind only quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Jennings also becomes one of the NFL’s highest-paid receivers by any measure, despite having yet to make a Pro Bowl.

Patriots 2009 NFL Predictions And 2010 Super Bowl Odds

New England Patriots 2009 NFL Predictions, Win Total & 2010 Super Bowl Odds: The New England Patriots are still the class of the AFC East and are going to recapture their division throne in 2009. Quarterback Tom Brady will return to a New England team that went 11-5 with bacup QB Matt Cassell who was dealt to Kansas City along with defensive leader Mike Vrabel and personnel chief Scott Pioli. Also departed is offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels who is now the coach of the Denver Broncos. What does all this turnover mean? Not much. If there is one thing that New England Head Coach Bill Bellichick has proven it is that his team adapts and always performs at a high level. The NFL predictions odds for the New England Patriots to win the 2010 Super Bowl is listed at 4-1 odds.

Celebrity QB Tom Brady makes his return in 2009 after a serious knee injury sidelined him for all of last season. Brady may experience some decreased mobility and rust due to the injury but still must be considered a Top-3 NFL QB. The Patriots have retooled their offense for Brady with a deep core of receivers and a new running back in Fred Taylor. WR Randy Moss is still the premier target with his ability to stretch the defense with his speed and get open because of his tremendous football I.Q. #2 wideout Wes Welker is also an outstanding slot receiver that consistently gets open underneath. Competition for the starting RB position will be held between Fred Taylor, Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk. Faulk is the most versatile, Taylor is the most established and Maroney has the most upside.  Whoever wins the starting RB position will be running behind a stout offensive line that does an excellent job of opening running lanes and protecting Tom Brady. The NFL predictions odds for the New England Patriots to win the AFC championship is at 2 -1 odds.

The Patriots 3-4 defense is Head Coach Bill Bellichick’s baby with its variety of different blitzes and nickel packages. The Patriots 8th ranked defense from a year ago could be even better with new additions added in free-agency and the draft. The defense is aging but they are still excellent across the board. The D-Line is arguably the best in the NFL with pocket collapsing DT Vince Wilfork leading the charge. The linebackers in the Patriots scheme are depended on to provide a pass-rush and this could be a breakout year for last season’s #1 pick ILB Jerod Mayo. Mayo was the NFL Defensive Rookie Of The Year and will need to pick up the slack for departed playmaker Mike Vrabel. Consistent CB Shawn Springs was added to bolster a deep secondary with a couple of talented safeties in Brandon Merriweather and James Sanders. Some wonder if Springs is past his prime, but only time will tell. Special Teams are a source of strength with a well-rounded unit that has a sniper accurate Kicker in Stephen Gostkowski.

The Patriots offensive juggernaut is in place for them to contend for a Superbowl in 2009. For the last 15 years New England has more wins than any other NFL franchise. Bill Bellichick simply reloads every season no matter what personnel he has to replace. Look for the Patriots to win the AFC East and make another trip to the 2010 Superbowl. The NFL Football predictions odds on the season Win Total for the New England Patriots is listed at 11.5 WINS.

In Houston Texans 2009 -NFL Season Predictions

The Houston Texans have now failed to make the playoffs in each season since joining the NFL in 2002. Last year the Texans tied their franchise best record of 8-8, but owner Bob McNair is tired of losing and feels like its time this team finished above .500 and made a run at the playoffs. Last year the Texans got off to a terrible 0-4 start, and to their credit were able to rebound late in the season, but if this franchise is going to get better it has to start beating the other teams in the AFC South. The Texans won just two games against AFC South opponents in 2008, and that is simply unacceptable for any team trying to make the playoffs.

The Texans really didn’t do a lot this offseason to bolster up their offense, as their biggest offseason move on this side of the ball came in the signing of backup quarterbacks Dan Orlovsky and Rex Grossman, both of whom the Texans hope remain as backups all season long. The team did however make some moves on the defensive side of things, and the biggest move was using their first round selection on USC linebacker Brian Cushing, who should immediately enter the starting lineup. The Texans also added defensive end Antonio Smith to start opposite of Mario Williams on the left side of the field. Other than that the Texans added some depth at linebacker in the additions of Cato June and Buster Davis and at defensive tackle in Shaun Cody. The Texans feel like they can challenge in the AFC South this season, but it won’t be easy getting past both the Colts and Titans this season.

Looking to hit it big with your NFL picks this season? Now is a great time to take advantage of the $500 match bonus at BetUS. All you have to do is sign up and deposit at least $500 and you get an additional $500 just for signing up.

The Texans should have no problems on the offensive side of things, as they return all 11 starters to a unit that finished 3rd in total offense. A big reason for the offenses explosive season was the outstanding success Steve Slaton had in his rookie year. Slaton wound up leading all rookies with 1,282 yards to go along with 10 touchdowns, not to mention this guy had 50 catches for an additional 377 yards. The team hopes that either Ryan Moats or Chris Brown can compliment Slaton by providing a little more power out of the backfield. A big reason the running game is so successful is opposing defenses have to pay so much attention to the Texans passing game. Quarterback Matt Schaub has all the tools to become an elite quarterback in this league, but he has to find a way to stay on the field, as he missed 5 games last season. Where the Texans are loaded is at the receiver position, as they have arguably the best receiver in the game today in Andre Johnson, who continues to keep getting better and better. Along with Johnson the Texans have a Pro Bowl tight end in Owen Daniels and a very good No.2 receiver in Kevin Walter. If the offense can stay healthy and on the field, this unit should once again be very hard to stop and near the top of the league in a number of categories. Bet the Texans +350 to win the AFC South .

On defense is where the Texans really need to improve this season if they want to make a run at this division. They have the players to get the job done, and now its just making things happen. The Texans have one of the best pass rushers in the game in Mario Williams, and with a new defensive coordinator in Frank Bush, I think we could see Williams come close to 17 or more sacks this season. For that to happen the Texans need a better showing from both Amobi Okoye and Travis Johnson on the inside, as both were a bit disappointing in 2008. At linebacker the rookie Cushing is expected to start on the outside opposite of Xavier Adibi, and if he can come in and be a playmaker for this unit, I really think this defense is going to be a lot better in 2009. Middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans is the leader of the defense, and after playing nearly all of last season with injuries, he could be ready for a monster season if he stays healthy. The Secondary has its concerns with corner Dunta Robinson, who is not happy at all about receiving the franchise tag this offseason. I expect him to play regardless of how the situation plays out, and he will team up with croner Jacques Reeves, who put together a pretty strong season last year. At safety the Texans will start Eugene Wilson at the free safety spot and Nick Ferguson at the strong safety spot, but keep a close eye on second year safety Dominique Barber, who should challenge Ferguson for the starting strong safety spot. Bet the Texans +4000 to win the NFL Super Bowl.
