The rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez, coming off an impressive first NFL game, will start the Jets’ preseason game at Baltimore next Monday.
Sanchez’s start had been planned before the preseason, but Coach Rex Ryan Ryan spoke glowingly of him Sunday, giving a clear indication of how far Sanchez’s star had risen.
“I think he earned the reps with the 1s and all that,” Ryan said. Referring to the plans to start Sanchez against the Ravens, he added: “It might have been done on paper that way in pencil, but he had to earn it. The guy had to earn his reps, and I think he’s done that.”
Many fans and members of the news media seem to believe that Sanchez has already taken a significant lead in the competition with quarterback Kellen Clemens to be the Jets’ starter.
“I’d say the good thing about that is that it’s an outsider’s opinion,” Clemens said. “It’s an insider who’s going to make the ultimate decision.”
How the quarterbacks perform against the Ravens’ stout defense could go a long way toward helping Ryan make that decision.
“Well, yeah, if you do anything against that bunch, you could move it against anybody,” Ryan said, referring to the Ravens’ defense. “It would count more than moving it against St. Louis. No disrespect to St. Louis, but they ain’t the Ravens and they’re not Pittsburgh.”
Clemens started the preseason opener, a 23-20 loss to the St. Louis Rams, on Friday. Sanchez came into the game with 28 seconds left in the first quarter; his first play was a 48-yard pass to David Clowney.
He finished 3 of 4 for 88 yards in one series, which ended in a 1-yard touchdown dive by Thomas Jones.
“He actually performed like I thought he would,” Ryan said of Sanchez. “He let his teammates work and, shoot, they drove it right down the field.”
Clemens was solid in the opener, but he lacked big plays or a star presence.
“I’m in a competition with a guy who obviously has some pretty serious ability,” Clemens said. “I don’t rank myself all that low, either.”
